As global supply chains tighten and brand owners demand higher accountability from packaging suppliers, thermoforming manufacturers must demonstrate compliance with a growing list of quality and sustainability standards. In 2024, buyers evaluating blister tray and clamshell suppliers should prioritize five core certifications that together cover quality management, environmental responsibility, material safety, and ESD performance. 1. ISO 9001:2015 – Quality Management System. ISO 9001 remains the foundational certification for any industrial packaging supplier. It verifies documented processes for design control, incoming inspection, process monitoring, traceability, and corrective action. For thermoformed packaging, ISO 9001 ensures that cavity dimensions, wall thickness, and surface resistivity remain consistent across production lots. 2. ISO 14001:2015 – Environmental Management System. With regulators and brand owners pushing toward net-zero goals, ISO 14001 demonstrates a supplier's commitment to controlling energy use, reducing scrap, and managing waste responsibly. It is especially relevant for PS and PET thermoforming, where material recovery and recycling loops are now expected. 3. RoHS 3 (Directive 2011/65/EU as amended). RoHS restricts hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium in electronic products—and extends to packaging that contacts electronics. Compliance documentation is mandatory for any blister tray shipping into the EU alongside semiconductors or PCBs. 4. REACH (EC 1907/2006). REACH requires registration and disclosure of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). Thermoformed packaging suppliers must provide updated SVHC declarations, particularly when using additives, colorants, or recycled content that could introduce restricted phthalates or heavy metals. 5. ANSI/ESD S20.20 and IEC 61340-5-1. For anti-static and semi-conductive trays, these ESD control standards define the program requirements, training, grounding, and packaging markings necessary to protect sensitive electronic components. Suppliers should test surface resistivity per IEC 61340-2-3 and provide lot-level certificates. Together, these five standards form a robust compliance framework. Buyers should request current certificates, verify scope, and audit suppliers periodically.
